Let me start by saying that The Possession is not a movie for horror fans. Anyone who has seen at least a couple of possession horror movies has seen all that this one has to offer. This movie is clearly made for the common person looking for a little thrill after a bad dinner in the mall. You know those that only pick the movie they want to see at the ticket line? The story goes like this, a little girl from a broken apart family picks up an old box at a garage sale. As it turns out the old box is a prison for a dybbuk, which for those unfamiliar with Hebrew folklore it’s a ghost or soul that escapes from hell and enters a person to try and live again. As the girl behaves increasingly erratically there’s the usual discussion of whether it’s a paranormal problem or a consequence of divorced parents… My favorite scene is when the girl stabs her father’s hand with a fork his reaction is to send her to her room. No discussion, no questions asked, nothing. The rest of the movie is a normal exorcism with all the usual scenes, including the one where the dybbuk seems to have left but in reality just took another body. In the end, the family is brought back together. Nothing like a possession and an exorcism to reunite divorced parents. Brilliant.

This was actually my face after seeing The Possession.

In technical terms the movie isn’t all bad sound, special effects, camera work and acting are all up to par. It’s just that the story is a little bland. And one last thing they never really went full evil with the girl, this is one thing you really must do in possession movies. The most unforgettable parts of The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose are when you forget the girl outside and all you can see is the demon within.

By the way watch or re-watch those instead of this one.
